Boat Trailer Weight Calculator

US & Canada

The brochure weight is only the start. A 1,800 lb boat with its engine, a 25 gallon tank, gear and the trailer weighs about 3,352 lb on the road. Put in your own numbers below.

Your boat and trailer

1. The boat

lb

From the builder's spec sheet or your manual. Most builders weigh the hull without the engine, fuel or gear.

lb

Outboard or sterndrive weight from its own spec sheet. Enter 0 if your builder's figure already includes the engine.

US gal

Count it full if you fill up at home before the drive.

US gal

Fresh water, a livewell, or wake boat ballast left in for the drive. 0 if you drain it.

lb

Batteries, anchor, cooler, life jackets, skis, tackle, the cover.

2. The trailer and the tow vehicle

lb

From the trailer maker's spec sheet, or weigh it empty.

lb

On the trailer's VIN plate, usually on the tongue. Leave 0 if unknown.

lb

Your vehicle's maximum trailer weight, from the owner's manual. Leave 0 to skip.

The builder's dry weight is the smallest number you will ever see for your boat. Engine, fuel, batteries and gear routinely add hundreds of pounds, and the trailer comes on top.

How much does a boat weigh to tow?

Total towed weight = boat (dry) + engine + fuel + water + gear + trailer (empty)

The builder's dry weight is the number on the brochure, and it is the smallest number your boat will ever weigh. Boston Whaler states it plainly: its Boston Whaler 170 Montauk is 1,700 lb (771 kg) "dry, no engine" and 2,254 lb (1,022 kg) with the standard engine, fuel and water. That is 554 lb before a single cooler or the trailer.

The calculator's example works it through: 1,800 lb of boat, 400 lb of engine, 25 gallons of gasoline (152 lb), 200 lb of gear and an 800 lb trailer come to 3,352 lb (1,521 kg). On a trailer rated 4,000 lb GVWR that leaves 648 lb spare.

  • Engine: most builders weigh the hull without it. Read the engine's own spec sheet; Boston Whaler lists a maximum engine weight of 410 lb for the 170 Montauk.
  • Fuel: about 6.09 lb per US gallon of gasoline. More on that below.
  • Water: 8.34 lb per US gallon. Drain livewells and ballast before the road if you can.
  • Gear: batteries, anchors, coolers, life jackets, skis, the cover. It adds up faster than people expect.
  • Trailer: from 210 lb for a jet ski trailer to 2,000 lb for a big tandem.

What real boats weigh, from the builders' spec sheets

Each row is read off the builder's own page on 2026-10-24, with the weight labelled the way the builder labels it. Builders do not measure the same thing: some include the engine, some include the trailer, some do not say. The last column adds a full tank of gasoline at 6.09 lb per gallon, our arithmetic, not the builder's.

MasterCraft also lists 3,500 lb of ballast for the XT22. Drain it before the road: Boatmate warns that adding ballast while the boat is on the trailer can take the trailer over its GVWR. Tracker sells the Classic XL as a boat, motor and trailer package, which is why its package weight includes the trailer.

Boat trailer capacity, GVWR and weight limit

Boat trailer makers name many trailers by their capacity (EZ Loader's V-4200 carries 4,200 lb), and capacity is not the same number as GVWR. On every row of both tables above, GVWR = carrying capacity + trailer weight. Federal rules define it this way: "Gross vehicle weight rating or GVWR means the value specified by the manufacturer as the loaded weight of a single vehicle." (49 CFR 571.3, Definitions). For a trailer, that includes the trailer itself.

  • Weight limit: the loaded trailer, boat and all, must stay at or under the GVWR on its VIN plate. The calculator checks exactly that.
  • Capacity: the boat as it sits, engine, fuel, water and gear included, must fit inside it. Sizing a trailer to the dry weight is the classic mistake.
  • Margin: the BoatUS Foundation notes that some experts suggest loading a trailer to no more than 85% of its GVWR. That is a suggestion, not a rule.
  • Axles and tires: each axle has its own rating (GAWR), and the tires have theirs. See how to read a trailer plate.

How much do fuel and water weigh?

Canada sets the density that retail fuel pumps must use when they correct volume for temperature: Measurement Canada's Bulletin V-18 gives gasoline 730 kg/m³ at 15 °C, within a published range of 640 to 780, and diesel 840 kg/m³. That is 6.09 lb per US gallon of gasoline (0.73 kg/L) and 7.01 lb per US gallon of diesel (0.84 kg/L). Real fuel moves with blend and temperature inside that range, which is why the BoatUS Foundation rounds gasoline to six pounds a gallon and Karavan sizes its jet ski trailers at 6.3. Water is 8.34 lb per US gallon (USGS Circular 1268, Conversion factors).

How much tongue weight should a boat trailer have?

Boat trailer makers publish 5 to 10% of the total weight of boat, motor, gear and trailer, measured with the tongue level:

  • MasterCraft, Knowledge Center: Trailer weight distribution: "It is extremely important that a minimum of five percent (5%) and a maximum of ten percent (10%) of the total weight on the trailer is on the trailer coupling ball when the tongue is parallel to the ground." Its example: a 3,000 lb rig carries 150 lb to 300 lb on the ball.
  • Boatmate Trailers, Towing Safety: "Once loaded properly and secure the tongue weight of your trailer should be 5-10% of the total weight of your boat and trailer to ensure safe towing characteristics from the trailer."
  • BoatUS Foundation, Boating Safety Study Guide: Transportation and Trailering: "Five to 10 percent of the total weight of the boat, motor, trailer, and gear should be on the trailer ball when the coupler is parallel to the ground."

That is lower than the general figure. Chevrolet gives 10 to 15% for a conventional ball hitch, and Honda's 2023 Pilot owner's manual lists 5 to 15% for boat trailers against 10 to 15% for other trailers. The calculator shows both bands.

All of these are manufacturer guidance, not law. No federal regulation in the US or Canada sets a tongue weight percentage. Your trailer's manual and your tow vehicle's manual decide, and a tongue scale tells you where you actually are. Too light and the trailer sways; too heavy and it eats your payload.

Tongue weight by total towed weight: boat trailer band and general ball hitch band
Boat, motor, gear and trailer Boat trailer, 5 to 10% General, 10 to 15%
1,000 lb (454 kg) 50 to 100 lb 100 to 150 lb
1,500 lb (680 kg) 75 to 150 lb 150 to 225 lb
2,000 lb (907 kg) 100 to 200 lb 200 to 300 lb
3,000 lb (1,361 kg) 150 to 300 lb 300 to 450 lb
4,000 lb (1,814 kg) 200 to 400 lb 400 to 600 lb
5,000 lb (2,268 kg) 250 to 500 lb 500 to 750 lb
6,000 lb (2,722 kg) 300 to 600 lb 600 to 900 lb
8,000 lb (3,629 kg) 400 to 800 lb 800 to 1,200 lb
10,000 lb (4,536 kg) 500 to 1,000 lb 1,000 to 1,500 lb

Moving the boat forward or back on the trailer, shifting gear inside it, or adjusting the winch post changes the tongue weight. Measure it after any change, with the tongue weight calculator to check the result.

How much towing capacity do you need for a boat?

Three checks, in this order, and the first is the one most people skip:

  1. Payload. The tongue weight, plus everyone and everything in the vehicle, must fit inside its payload. See the payload calculator.
  2. Tow rating. The total towed weight, trailer included, must be inside the vehicle's maximum trailer weight. Boatmate goes further: the trailer's GVWR "should never exceed the tow rating of your vehicle".
  3. GCWR. Vehicle, people, cargo and trailer together must fit inside the gross combination rating.

That applies to a pontoon, a bass boat or a wake boat alike; only the numbers change. For a specific truck or SUV, the figures are on its door sticker and in its owner's manual, not on any website, and Can I tow this? runs all three checks at once. If you only know the VIN, here is what a VIN can and cannot tell you.

Do boat trailers need brakes?

Most of the rules on our trailer brakes page set one weight line for every trailer, boat trailers included, and the rule is the one where you drive. A few states write boat trailers in by name. Examples, read at source:

  • Florida: Brakes on all wheels unless the trailer weighs 3,000 lb gross or less and its loaded weight is no more than 40 percent of the tow vehicle's gross weight. Fla. Stat. § 316.261(3)(a) and (4).
  • Ontario: "Every trailer or semi-trailer having a gross weight of 1,360 kilograms or more shall be equipped with brakes adequate to stop and to hold the vehicle." Highway Traffic Act (Ontario), R.S.O. 1990, c. H.8, s. 64(5).
  • Ohio: Brakes applied from the cab on trailers with an empty weight of 2,000 lb or more; boat trailers of 3,000 lb or more (built from 2008) need surge or electric brakes. Ohio Rev. Code § 4513.20(A)(4) and (5).
  • Nebraska: Cabin (camping) trailers and boat trailers: brakes on at least two wheels from 3,000 lb gross loaded weight, and on every wheel from 6,500 lb; commercial trailers with over 10,000 lb carrying capacity need brakes on every wheel. Neb. Rev. Stat. § 60-6,246.

Weigh the trailer with the boat, engine, fuel and gear on it, then check your province or state on do I need trailer brakes? Boat trailers often use surge brakes; Honda's 2023 Pilot owner's manual notes they "are common for boat trailers, since the brakes will get wet".

Weight distribution and sway control on a boat trailer

A weight distribution hitch can fight with surge brakes, so ask the trailer maker before you fit one. Boatmate says it "does not advocate the use of WDH due to the adverse effects they can have on the surge brake systems found on most of our trailers", and to have a professional set one up if your vehicle requires it. Sway usually starts with tongue weight that is too light, so check that first.

Weigh it, then trust the scale

  1. Load the boat as you tow it: fuel, batteries, gear, and any water you leave in.
  2. Weigh the whole rig on a public scale, then the tow vehicle alone. The difference is the trailer, loaded.
  3. Measure tongue weight with a tongue scale, or weigh the vehicle with and without the trailer hitched and the trailer's wheels off the platform.
  4. Compare the trailer's loaded weight with its GVWR, and the tongue weight with your vehicle's limits.

Common questions

How much does a boat weigh?
Anything from a few hundred pounds to several thousand. From the builders' own spec sheets: a Hobie 16 sailboat is 320 lb (145 kg), a Bass Tracker Classic XL fishing boat 780 lb (354 kg) dry, a Boston Whaler 170 Montauk 1,700 lb (771 kg) without its engine, a Sun Tracker Party Barge 20 DLX pontoon 2,080 lb (943 kg) dry and a MasterCraft XT22 wake boat 5,485 lb (2,488 kg). Your own boat's figure is on its spec sheet or in its manual.
How much does a boat weigh to tow?
More than the brochure says. Towed weight is the boat plus engine, fuel, water, gear and the trailer itself. With the calculator's example figures, a 1,800 lb boat becomes 3,352 lb (1,521 kg) on the road, 1.9 times its dry weight.
How much does a boat weigh with a trailer?
Add the trailer's empty weight to the loaded boat. Boat trailers run from 210 lb for a single jet ski trailer to 2,000 lb for a tandem trailer for a 25 to 27 ft boat, on the two makers' sheets on this page. Tracker publishes a package weight for its Classic XL: 1,705 lb (773 kg) for boat, motor and trailer, against 780 lb for the boat alone.
How much does a boat weigh in kg?
Every figure on this page is in pounds and kilograms, and the calculator works in either. The Boston Whaler 170 Montauk is 771 kg dry without its engine, and the Sun Tracker Party Barge 20 DLX 943 kg dry. In Canada the trailer's VIN plate gives its GVWR in kilograms too.
How much tongue weight should a boat trailer have?
Boat trailer makers publish 5 to 10% of the total weight of boat, motor, gear and trailer: MasterCraft and Boatmate both say so, and so does the BoatUS Foundation. On a 3,000 lb (1,361 kg) rig that is 150 lb to 300 lb. It is manufacturer guidance, not law, and your tow vehicle's manual may ask for a different band.
Why is boat trailer tongue weight lower than other trailers?
Because boat and boat trailer makers publish a lower band for their own trailers; it is their guidance, not a rule. Chevrolet gives 10 to 15% for a conventional ball hitch, and Honda's 2023 Pilot owner's manual lists 5 to 15% for boat trailers against 10 to 15% for others. Use the band your trailer and vehicle manuals give, and check the result on a tongue scale.
How much towing capacity do I need to tow a boat?
At least the total towed weight, including the trailer, and payload for the tongue weight on top. Boatmate puts it more simply: the trailer's GVWR should never exceed your vehicle's tow rating, because GVWR is what the loaded trailer is allowed to weigh. Then run your own door sticker numbers through Can I tow this?, because payload often runs out first.
How much does a pontoon boat weigh?
Sun Tracker lists its Party Barge 20 DLX at 2,080 lb (943 kg) average dry weight and 3,745 lb (1,699 kg) average package weight; it does not say on that page what the package includes, and the trailer is an option. A full 32.1 gal tank adds about 196 lb of gasoline.
How much does a jet ski weigh?
Sea-Doo lists the Spark at 437 lb (198 kg) dry for the Spark for 2 and 452 lb (205 kg) for the Spark for 3, with a 7.9 gal tank. Karavan's jet ski trailers weigh 210 to 531 lb (95 to 241 kg) empty, single and double.
How much does a sailboat weigh?
It depends entirely on the boat, from a beach catamaran to a trailerable keelboat. Hobie lists the Hobie 16 catamaran at 320 lb (145 kg). For any other sailboat, take the weight from its spec sheet and add the trailer, the rig if it is not counted, and gear.
How much does a yacht weigh?
This page is about boats you tow, and the builder's spec sheet is the only honest source for any one boat. If your boat goes on a trailer at all, the same sum applies: the boat as it sits, plus fuel, water and gear, plus the trailer, all inside the trailer's GVWR and your tow rating.
What is a boat trailer's weight capacity?
What it can carry: its GVWR minus its own weight. EZ Loader's V-4200 shows it, with a carrying capacity of 4,200 lb, a trailer weight of 900 lb and a GVWR of 5,100 lb. The capacity has to cover the boat, engine, fuel, water and gear together, not the boat's dry weight.
How much does gas weigh in a boat?
About 6.09 lb per US gallon, or 0.73 kg per litre: that is the standard density Measurement Canada requires for retail gasoline sales, 730 kg/m³ at 15 °C. Diesel is about 7.01 lb per gallon. A 25 gal tank of gasoline is about 152 lb; 79 gal is about 481 lb.
Do boat trailers need brakes?
Mostly under the same weight rule as any other trailer, where you drive, though a few states name boat trailers outright. Florida: brakes on all wheels unless the trailer weighs 3,000 lb gross or less and its loaded weight is no more than 40 percent of the tow vehicle's gross weight (Fla. Stat. § 316.261(3)(a) and (4)). Ontario: "Every trailer or semi-trailer having a gross weight of 1,360 kilograms or more shall be equipped with brakes adequate to stop and to hold the vehicle." (Highway Traffic Act (Ontario), R.S.O. 1990, c. H.8, s. 64(5)). Ohio: brakes applied from the cab on trailers with an empty weight of 2,000 lb or more; boat trailers of 3,000 lb or more (built from 2008) need surge or electric brakes (Ohio Rev. Code § 4513.20(A)(4) and (5)). Every province and state is on the trailer brakes page.
Can I use a weight distribution hitch on a boat trailer?
Check with the trailer maker first. Boatmate, for one, "does not advocate the use of WDH due to the adverse effects they can have on the surge brake systems found on most of our trailers", and says to have a professional set one up if your vehicle requires it.
