Motorhome, Camper Van and Truck Camper Weights

US & Canada

Real weights from the makers' spec pages, every row linked, and a check for the two questions they raise: will my truck carry this camper, and how much car can my motorhome tow?

Truck camper on a pickup, or a motorhome towing a car

1. What you are checking

people

Counted at 150 lb (68 kg) each, the figure the regulations build GVWR from.

lb

Food, clothes, tools, bikes, generator, and any water beyond what the camper's wet figure already counts.

2. Truck camper (used when checking a truck camper)

lb

The "combined weight of occupants and cargo" on the door placard. Using the owner's manual cargo weight rating instead? It already excludes the seats, so set People to 0.

lb

From the label on the camper's rear wall or the maker's wet figure. Only a dry weight? Add the water and propane in Gear.

lb

Air conditioner, generator, awning, extra battery, solar, tie-downs: anything not in the published figure.

3. Motorhome (used when checking a motorhome)

lb

From the coach's weight label or spec sheet, or better, a scale.

lb

On the certification label. 0 skips this check.

lb

In the spec sheet or chassis towing guide. 0 skips this check.

lb

The receiver's rating for this kind of tow. Some coaches print a separate flat-tow figure. 0 skips this check.

lb

The car with what is in it, plus the dolly or trailer if you use one.

lb

The vertical load the tow bar, dolly or trailer puts on the receiver. It counts on the motorhome, not twice.

How it adds up

How it adds up

Payload and GVWR are limits on the vehicle; GCWR is a limit on the whole combination. The tongue counts as cargo on the vehicle and cancels out of the GCWR sum. Weigh the loaded rig, axle by axle, to be sure.

The arithmetic

Truck camper (the truck camper option in the calculator):

  • Payload used = people (150 lb each) + camper wet weight + options and tie-downs + gear
  • Payload left = the truck's payload from the door placard − payload used

The default rig is a Lance 855S at its published wet weight of 3,191 lb (1,447 kg), with 200 lb (91 kg) of options, 600 lb (272 kg) of gear and two people, on an illustrative truck with 3,800 lb (1,724 kg) of payload. That uses 4,291 lb (1,946 kg), so the truck is 491 lb (223 kg) over payload. The heaviest camper that payload carries with the same people, gear and options is 2,700 lb (1,225 kg) wet.

Motorhome towing a car:

  • Motorhome loaded = UVW + people + gear + any weight on the hitch, checked against GVWR
  • Room under GCWR = GCWR − (UVW + people + gear)
  • Heaviest tow = the smaller of the room under GCWR and the hitch rating

The default is an Airstream Interstate 24GT as published: 9,423 lb (4,274 kg) empty, 11,030 lb (5,003 kg) GVWR, 15,250 lb (6,917 kg) GCWR and tow capacity up to 5,000 lb (2,268 kg). With two people and 600 lb (272 kg) of gear it weighs 10,323 lb (4,682 kg), leaving 4,927 lb (2,235 kg) under the GCWR. That is less than the tow rating, so GCWR sets the limit, and a 4,000 lb (1,814 kg) car flat towed on a tow bar fits with 927 lb (420 kg) to spare. Put the same car on a 740 lb dolly (U-Haul's rental figure) with an illustrative 300 lb on the hitch and the combination is 15,063 lb (6,832 kg), only 187 lb (85 kg) under the GCWR. The 300 lb on the hitch counts on the motorhome but not twice in the GCWR sum: it is weight moved from the dolly's wheels to the coach's.

How much does an RV weigh?

The table below is the range across every model we read off the makers' own pages, 78 motorhomes, 33 truck campers, 6 cap sizes and 10 toy haulers. It is a range of this sample, not an industry average. Empty is the maker's own empty figure (UVW, base weight or dry weight); GVWR is the most the vehicle may weigh loaded.

In tons: a camper van is 3.8 to 4.9 US tons, 3.4 to 4.4 tonnes empty; a Class A diesel 13 to 25 US tons, 11.8 to 22.7 tonnes. A slide-in truck camper is cargo, not a vehicle, so it has no GVWR of its own: its limit is the truck's payload and axle ratings. Travel trailers, pop-ups and teardrops are on trailer weight by length, and fifth wheels on fifth wheel pin weight.

Class A motorhome weight, gas and diesel

Newmar is the one Class A builder we found that prints an empty weight for every floor plan: approximate UVW, net carrying capacity, GVWR, GCWR and three hitch ratings. Its 47 2027 Class A floor plans weigh 17,650 to 50,000 lb (8,006 to 22,680 kg) empty. The Ford-engined Bay Star and Bay Star Sport, 28 ft 11 in to 38 ft 11 in long, are 17,650 to 22,850 lb. The diesel coaches (Cummins and Detroit Diesel engines), the ones searched for as diesel pushers or RV buses, are 25,950 to 50,000 lb, with GVWRs from 32,000 lb to 54,000 lb.

Tiffin's 2027 Open Road Allegro, a Class A, prints ratings but no empty weight: GVWR 22,000 lb (29 NA, 32 ft) and 26,000 lb (34 PA, 36 ft 1 in), GCWR 26,000 lb and 30,000 lb, a 5,000 lb hitch and a maximum trailer weight of 4,000 lb. Tiffin's note on that figure applies to every motorhome: "Maximum Trailer Weight is dependent on the loading and towing variables which include the GVWR, GAWR, and GCWR, as well as adequate trailer brakes."

Class C and Super C motorhome weight

Gas Class C (Winnebago's Minnie Winnie, for one, is built on a Ford E450 chassis): Winnebago, Jayco and Thor print GVWR, GCWR and the hitch rating, but none of the pages we read gives an empty weight. Winnebago's Minnie Winnie spec table has a Dry Weight row and leaves it blank. The GVWR is the useful number: it is what a loaded coach may weigh, and it is on the label in the coach.

Super C: Newmar lists its diesel Grand Star, Super Star, Supreme Aire and Summit Aire as Class C. Their 16 floor plans weigh 25,500 to 43,500 lb (11,567 to 19,731 kg) empty, with GVWRs of 35,200 to 58,000 lb and hitches rated up to 30,000 lb. They weigh as much as a diesel Class A.

Camper van (Class B) weight: Sprinter and ProMaster

Airstream prints a Unit Base Weight, GVWR, GCWR, net carrying capacity and tow rating for each van. The Sprinter-based Interstate and the ProMaster-based Rangeline weigh 7,595 to 9,763 lb (3,445 to 4,428 kg) empty. What stands out is how little is left: net carrying capacity runs 1,223 to 1,689 lb, and that has to cover everyone aboard, the water, food and gear.

The 24GL's carrying capacity is for the rear-wheel-drive van; the AWD version prints 1,267 lb. Mercedes-Benz, Ford Transit and VW based vans from other converters are not in our sample. For any of them the method is the same: the GVWR is on the door label, and a scale with full fuel and water tells you what is left.

Why motorhome makers print GVWR, and where the real weight is

An empty weight on a brochure is for a standard build, and Newmar marks its figures approximate. What your coach may carry is on a yellow label. US rules require every motor home to carry a black-on-yellow Motor Home Occupant and Cargo Carrying Capacity label inside the forward-most exterior passenger door on the right, stating: "THE COMBINED WEIGHT OF OCCUPANTS AND CARGO SHOULD NEVER EXCEED: XXX kg or XXX lbs" That is FMVSS 110 for coaches up to 10,000 lb GVWR and FMVSS 120 above it, and both require the same caution: "CAUTION: A full load of water equals XXX kg or XXX lbs of cargo @ 1 kg/L (8.3 lb/gal) and the tongue weight of a towed trailer counts as cargo"

The weights behind that label are the coach as configured for delivery to the dealer, with full propane in the unloaded weight and on-board water treated as cargo. In Canada the compliance label, or a label beside it, must state cargo-carrying capacity and the mass of the full fresh, hot and waste water tanks in both official languages, with a statement that the capacity shown assumes the fresh and hot water tanks full and the waste tanks empty.

So cargo carrying capacity is GVWR minus the unloaded weight, and it is the budget for everyone aboard, the water, food, gear and any tongue weight. Winnebago's own spec footnote is worth remembering when you load the bays: "The load capacity of your motorhome is designated by weight, not by volume, so you cannot necessarily use all available space when loading your motorhome."

Truck camper weight: dry, wet and what your truck carries

A slide-in camper rides in the bed, so all of it is payload. US federal rules (49 CFR 575.103) require the camper maker to label the camper on an exterior rear surface with its maximum weight when it contains standard equipment, full fresh water tanks, full bottled gas and the refrigerator or icebox. That is the wet figure, and it is the one to plan on. The same rule makes the maker's manual tell you how to add it up: "To estimate the total cargo load that will be placed on a truck, add the weight of all passengers in the camper, the weight of supplies, tools, and all other cargo, the weight of installed additional or optional camper equipment, and the manufacturer's camper weight figure." We have not checked whether Canada's regulations carry an equivalent label rule, so in Canada read the camper's own label or spec sheet.

The truck side of the same rule: a truck that can take a slide-in camper comes with a cargo weight rating and a recommended centre of gravity zone in its manual. The regulation defines it: "Cargo Weight Rating means the value specified by the manufacturer as the cargo-carrying capacity, in pounds or kilograms, of a vehicle, exclusive of the weight of occupants in designated seating positions, computed as 68 kilograms or 150 pounds times the number of designated seating positions." So it already leaves out the seats; use it with People set to 0 in the calculator; the door placard's figure includes the people, so use it with your real head count. Lance's guide, which is advice rather than law, says to weigh the truck with full fuel and the usual passengers and subtract that from GVWR, and on the camper side: "To determine the approximate weight of a camper, add the weight of all optional equipment (both factory- and dealer-installed) to the camper wet weight that's posted next to the camper's entry door."

In our sample, hard-side campers weigh 1,490 to 4,063 lb (676 to 1,843 kg) dry and pop-ups 950 to 1,300 lb (431 to 590 kg). Lance's wet weights run 203 to 548 lb above dry. Northern Lite describes its 610 as designed for domestic half-ton trucks.

Four Wheel Campers prints "Base Model Dry Weight"; its flatbed models are for trucks with a flatbed instead of a box. The nuCamp Cirrus 920 is left out because nuCamp's 2026 sheets disagree on its weight. Bigfoot, Northern Lite and nuCamp print dry weight only, so add the water and propane yourself.

After payload, check the axles. The truck maker's centre of gravity zone is drawn so that a camper at the full cargo weight rating exceeds neither GAWR, which only holds if the camper's centre of gravity falls inside it. The federal rule's own instruction is to drive the loaded truck camper to a scale and weigh the front and rear wheels separately. Air springs and heavier shocks improve handling, but Lance is clear they raise no rating. The payload calculator does the same sum for any load in the bed, and the door sticker page shows where each rating is printed.

Camper shell and truck cap weight

Many cap makers do not print a weight: LEER's 100XL product page and A.R.E.'s cap pages list construction, windows and locks, but no weight for any truck or bed. Four Wheel Campers does, for its Project M topper:

Four Wheel Campers Project M topper, base weight
Truck Bed Base weight
Mid-size 5 ft+ 352 lb (160 kg)
Jeep Gladiator 5 ft+ 352 lb (160 kg)

Full-size 5 ft+ 390 lb (177 kg)
Full-size 6 ft+ 420 lb (191 kg)
Full-size 8 ft 465 lb (211 kg)

A cap is payload like anything else in the bed, and so is what you put on and in it. A.R.E.'s product pages carry this warning: "CAUTION: The weight of this product and the weight of the cargo it was designed to carry may be more than your truck was designed to carry on the bed rails. Please consult your truck manufacturer." If your cap's weight is not printed, weigh the truck with and without it, or ask the dealer for the figure for your truck and bed.

Toy hauler weight

A toy hauler is a travel trailer or fifth wheel with a rear garage, and the garage is built to carry heavy toys, so the loaded weight can sit far above the empty one. Grand Design prints UVW, hitch weight and GVWR for each model.

The published hitch weights are 14.5 to 17.2% of the empty trailer on the travel trailers and 17.6 to 21.8% on the fifth wheels (our arithmetic). Loading the garage changes that share, which is why a toy hauler should be weighed loaded. GVWR minus UVW is the most the toys, water and gear may add: 2,700 to 4,408 lb on these travel trailers. Run the loaded figure through Can I tow this?, or the fifth wheel pin weight calculator for a fifth wheel.

Towing a car behind a motorhome: GCWR minus the loaded coach

A motorhome has two towing limits and the lower one wins. The hitch rating is printed by the maker. The GCWR is the most the loaded coach and everything behind it may weigh together, so the room it leaves depends on how heavily you have loaded the coach. In our Interstate example, 600 lb (272 kg) of gear is enough to make GCWR, not the 5,000 lb tow rating, the limit.

Hitch ratings in our sample run from 3,500 lb on the Rangeline vans to 30,000 lb on Newmar's largest diesels. Newmar prints separate flat-tow and trailer ratings, and they are not always the same: the New Aire is rated 10,000 lb for a car towed four wheels down but 5,000 lb for a trailer (New Aire). Use the rating for the way you tow.

Weight on the hitch counts as cargo on the coach; that is the exact wording of the federal label. A dolly or car trailer also adds its own empty weight to the towed load. The flat tow vs dolly vs trailer page works out the towed weight each way, and whether your car may be flat towed at all, which is the car maker's decision. The receiver itself is covered by the hitch class finder.

What we could not find, and what this page does not cover

  • Empty weights for gas Class C and most Class A coaches. Winnebago, Thor, Jayco and Tiffin print ratings, not an empty weight, on the pages we read. Read the yellow label in the coach, or weigh it.
  • Truck campers we checked but could not list: GoFast Campers prints load ratings but no camper weight; Four Wheel Campers' CampOut prints module weights only.
  • Brands not in our sample, including Host, Arctic Fox, Palomino, Capri, Scout, Hiatus, Kimbo, Roo, Lone Peak and vintage coaches such as the GMC motorhome: check the maker's spec sheet or the label on the unit, or weigh it.
  • Component weights such as batteries, solar panels, generators and slide-outs. The maker of each part prints its own.
  • Travel trailers, pop-ups and teardrops are on trailer weight by length; fifth wheels on fifth wheel pin weight.

Regulations, definitions and the dolly figure in the worked example:

  • 49 CFR 575.103(e)(1)(i)(C), Truck-camper loading: camper label: Every slide-in camper must carry a permanent label on an exterior rear surface stating its maximum weight with standard equipment, full fresh water tanks, full bottled gas and the refrigerator or icebox, and pointing to the owner's manual for the weight of optional equipment. That is the US legal basis for the "wet" figure. Checked 2026-10-24.
  • 49 CFR 575.103(e)(1)(ii)(C), Truck-camper loading: owner's manual statement: The camper maker's manual must tell you to add passengers in the camper, supplies, tools and cargo, installed optional equipment and the camper weight figure, and to pick a truck whose cargo weight rating covers the total and whose recommended centre of gravity zone contains the camper's centre of gravity. Checked 2026-10-24.
  • 49 CFR 575.103(d) and (e)(2), Truck-camper loading: cargo weight rating: A truck able to take a slide-in camper must come with its cargo weight rating and a recommended centre of gravity zone for it, set so that a camper weighing the full rating does not exceed either GAWR. The cargo weight rating excludes 150 lb (68 kg) for each designated seat, so people in the cab are already allowed for in it, unlike the door placard's occupants and cargo figure. The truck maker must also tell you to weigh the loaded truck camper axle by axle and keep each axle under its GAWR and the total under GVWR. Checked 2026-10-24.
  • 49 CFR 571.110, S9.3 and S9.3.4 (motor homes up to 10,000 lb GVWR): A motor home at 10,000 lb GVWR or less carries a black-on-yellow Motor Home Occupant and Cargo Carrying Capacity label inside the forward-most exterior passenger door on the right side, stating the VIN, the combined occupant and cargo limit and the belted seating capacity. The UVW and GVWR behind it are as the coach was configured for delivery to the dealer, with full propane tanks in the UVW and on-board water treated as cargo. Checked 2026-10-24.
  • 49 CFR 571.120, S10.4 and S10.4.4 (motor homes over 10,000 lb GVWR): Heavier motor homes carry the same black-on-yellow occupant and cargo carrying capacity label under FMVSS 120, with the same caution that a full load of water and the tongue weight of a towed trailer count as cargo. Checked 2026-10-24.
  • Motor Vehicle Safety Regulations (C.R.C., c. 1038), s. 6(8): On a Canadian recreational trailer or motor home the compliance label, or a label beside it, must show cargo-carrying capacity and the mass of the full fresh, hot and waste water tanks, in both official languages. Checked 2026-10-24.
  • 49 CFR 571.110, S9.3.4(e): The regulation itself says so, on the motor home capacity label. The physics is the same on any tow vehicle: the tongue comes out of the occupants and cargo figure. Checked 2026-10-24.
  • 49 CFR 567.4(g)(3): The 150 lb per seat this site uses for occupants is the figure the regulation itself builds GVWR from. It is not a guess, and it is not an average adult. Checked 2026-10-23.
  • 49 CFR 571.3, Definitions: Curb weight includes a full tank, and excludes people and anything you take off when you are not using it. Checked 2026-10-23.
  • 49 CFR 571.3, Definitions: GVWR is set by the manufacturer, and it is a loaded weight, not an empty one. Checked 2026-10-23.
  • U-Haul, Tow Dolly rental: Capacity and Towing Vehicle Requirements: U-Haul tow dolly: max load 4,080 lb, empty weight 740 lb, automatic hydraulic surge brake, 4-way flat light connector. Towing vehicle: maximum recommended speed 55 mph, 2 inch hitch ball rated 3,500 lb minimum, ball no higher than 25 in, mirrors both sides, hard top on SUVs and select Jeeps, and curb weight that exceeds the loaded trailer. The page says the dolly tows most FWD and many RWD vehicles, and that a RWD vehicle needs its driveshaft disconnected. Checked 2026-10-24.

Maker spec pages, each opened on 2026-10-24. Every row in the tables comes from one of these:

  • Lance Camper, Truck Camper Compatibility Guide (guidance, not law). Lance's method for matching a camper to a truck: weigh the truck at a commercial scale with full fuel and the usual passengers in the cab, subtract that from GVWR for the cargo the truck can carry, then add every factory and dealer option and your supplies and gear to the camper's posted wet weight. Lance also says support equipment such as air springs and cabover shocks improves handling but does not raise GVWR, GAWR or GCWR.

The sheet prints 4,419 lb for both the 920 and 920 Elite, while nuCamp's 2026 sell sheet prints 3,877 lb for the 920, so we leave the 920 out.
  • nuCamp, 2026 Cirrus sell sheet. How nuCamp defines dry weight: standard equipment only, with no propane, no tank fluids, no cargo and no options.

Common questions

How much does an RV weigh?
It depends far more on the type than on the length. From makers' own spec pages: camper vans (Class B) 7,595 to 9,763 lb (3,445 to 4,428 kg) empty; Newmar's Super C coaches 25,500 to 43,500 lb (11,567 to 19,731 kg); Class A motorhomes 17,650 to 50,000 lb (8,006 to 22,680 kg); slide-in truck campers 950 to 4,063 lb (431 to 1,843 kg) dry. Loaded, plan on the GVWR on the certification label, because that is the most the vehicle may weigh.
How much does a motorhome weigh in tons or kilograms?
Across the 73 motorhomes in our sample, empty weight runs 7,595 to 50,000 lb (3,445 to 22,680 kg), which is 3.8 to 25 US tons, 3.4 to 22.7 tonnes. A camper van is at the bottom of that range and a 45 ft diesel Class A at the top.
How much does a Class A motorhome weigh?
Newmar's 2027 Class A floor plans weigh 17,650 to 50,000 lb (8,006 to 22,680 kg) empty (approximate UVW as Newmar prints it). The Ford-engined Bay Star and Bay Star Sport are 17,650 to 22,850 lb with GVWRs of 20,500 to 26,000 lb; the diesel coaches, the ones people call diesel pushers or RV buses, are 25,950 to 50,000 lb with GVWRs up to 54,000 lb.
How much does a Class C RV weigh?
Winnebago, Jayco and Thor print GVWR but not an empty weight for their gas Class C coaches: 12,500 to 14,500 lb GVWR on the models we read, which is the most they may weigh loaded. Newmar's Sprinter-based Freedom Aire prints 11,300 lb (5,126 kg) empty. Diesel Super C coaches are much heavier: 25,500 to 43,500 lb (11,567 to 19,731 kg) empty.
How much does a camper van weigh?
Airstream's Class B vans weigh 7,595 to 9,763 lb (3,445 to 4,428 kg) empty: the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter based Interstate 7,595 to 9,763 lb and the Ram ProMaster based Rangeline 7,661 to 8,060 lb. Their GVWRs are 9,050 to 11,030 lb, so the net carrying capacity left for people, water and gear is only 1,223 to 1,689 lb.
How much does a truck camper weigh?
In our sample: pop-up slide-ins from Four Wheel Campers 950 to 1,300 lb (431 to 590 kg) (base dry weight); hard-side campers 1,490 to 4,063 lb (676 to 1,843 kg) dry. Lance is the one maker here that prints a wet weight, 2,016 to 4,517 lb, which is 203 to 548 lb more than dry. Options, gear and people come on top, and all of it counts against your truck's payload.
What is the difference between dry and wet weight on a truck camper?
Dry weight is the camper with standard equipment and nothing in the tanks; nuCamp's definition: "Dry weight is the weight of the camper with standard equipment. This excludes propane, tank fluids, cargo, and optional equipment." The weight US law makes the maker print on the camper's rear wall is closer to wet: standard equipment plus full fresh water, full bottled gas and the refrigerator. Plan on the wet figure plus your options.
How much does a camper shell weigh?
Four Wheel Campers prints 352 to 465 lb (160 to 211 kg) for its Project M topper, depending on truck and bed: 352 lb on a mid-size 5 ft bed up to 465 lb on a full-size 8 ft bed. LEER and A.R.E. print no cap weight on the product pages we read. Whatever yours weighs comes out of payload, and A.R.E. warns that a cap and its cargo can exceed what the bed rails are designed for.
How much does a toy hauler weigh?
Grand Design's Momentum MAV travel trailer toy haulers weigh 5,542 to 8,400 lb (2,514 to 3,810 kg) empty with GVWRs of 9,950 to 12,000 lb. Its Momentum G-Class fifth wheel toy haulers weigh 12,603 to 16,400 lb (5,717 to 7,439 kg) with GVWRs up to 22,500 lb. The garage is built to carry heavy toys, so the loaded weight matters more here than on any other camper.
Can a half-ton truck carry a truck camper?
Some campers are built for it: Northern Lite describes its 610 (about 1,490 lb) as designed for domestic half-ton trucks, and in our sample the lightest hard-side camper is nuCamp's Cirrus 620 at 1,565 lb dry, and the lightest pop-up the Four Wheel Campers Swift at 950 lb. Whether yours can is a payload question: put the camper's wet weight, options, gear and people in the calculator above against the payload on your door placard.
How much car can I tow behind my motorhome?
The smaller of two numbers: the hitch rating, and the GCWR minus what the loaded motorhome weighs. In our worked example an Airstream Interstate 24GT with two people and 600 lb of gear has 4,927 lb left under its GCWR, a little under its 5,000 lb tow rating, so GCWR is the limit. Our flat tow vs dolly page works out what each way of towing the car weighs.
What is cargo carrying capacity on an RV?
GVWR minus the RV's unloaded weight: what is left for people, water, food and gear. US rules require a yellow label inside the entry door of every motor home stating it, and the label warns that a full load of water counts as cargo at 8.3 lb per gallon and that the tongue weight of a towed trailer counts as cargo too. In Canada the compliance label, or one beside it, must show cargo-carrying capacity and the mass of the full water tanks.
How much weight does a camper van conversion add?
There is no honest single figure: it depends entirely on the build. The useful number is what is left, so weigh the van with full fuel and water and compare it with the GVWR on the door label. On Airstream's factory vans that margin is 1,223 to 1,689 lb.
Do I need a weight distribution hitch or brakes on a toy hauler or a car behind a motorhome?
A bumper-pull toy hauler is a travel trailer for hitch purposes; see weight distribution. Brakes on a towed trailer or car depend on its weight and where you drive: do I need trailer brakes has the rules by province and state.
How much does a Lance, Bigfoot or Four Wheel Camper weigh?
Lance 1,795 to 4,063 lb dry and 2,016 to 4,517 lb wet; Bigfoot 2,061 to 3,220 lb dry; Four Wheel Campers Hawk 1,200 lb base dry weight, and the rest of the Four Wheel Campers pop-ups 950 to 1,882 lb. Every model is in the tables below with a link to the maker's page.
