EV Towing Range Calculator
US & CanadaTowing roughly halves an EV's range, and often takes more. Pick a tested loss figure, enter your trip, and see how far you get between charges.

Your towing range
Loss figures are real-world test results and maker statements, not ratings. No standard measures towing range, so your own trip meter beats any figure here.
How much range does towing take from an EV?
About half, and often more. No standard measures towing range, so the honest numbers are real-world tests and what the makers themselves say. These are the figures the calculator offers. Each one is tied to the trailer and speed it was measured with, and they are guidance, not ratings.

| Rivian R1T towing 8,992 lb, averaged over MotorTrend's runs | 45% | MotorTrend, "How Far Can You Tow With an Electric Truck?" (Dec. 15, 2021) |
| Rivian's support page, hauling 11,000 lb | 50% | Rivian Support, "How does towing affect range?" |

| F-150 Lightning Platinum (EPA 300 mi) towing a 6,100 lb camper at 70 mph: 100 mi | 67% | Car and Driver, 2024 Ford F-150 Lightning review |
| F-150 Lightning Platinum (EPA 300 mi) towing a 7,218 lb Grand Design Imagine at 64 to 67 mph: 90 mi | 70% | MotorTrend, "Tow No! The Ford F-150 Lightning Struggled in Our Towing Test" (July 31, 2022) |
Where a test reported a towing range instead of a percentage, the loss is worked out against the truck's EPA rating, because that is the number you will type in: 100 mi towed against a 300 mi rating is a 67% loss. Car and Driver ran three trucks side by side with the same 6,100 lb (2,767 kg) camper at 70 mph and found that "The range for all three trucks when towing was less than half as far as when cruising lightly loaded at 75 mph."
The arithmetic
- Towing range = rated range × (1 − loss)
- First leg = towing range × (starting charge − reserve)
- Each leg after a stop = towing range × (charge-to level − reserve)
- Stops = whatever is left of the trip after the first leg, divided by one leg, rounded up
Take a truck rated for 300 mi (483 km) towing at a 50% loss. Its towing range is 150 mi (241 km). Leave full, keep 10% in reserve and you have 135 mi (217 km) before the first stop. Charging to 80% each time gives 105 mi (169 km) per leg after that. A 250 mi (402 km) trip needs 2 stops. Without the trailer the same truck would do it on one charge.
Why towing hits an EV so hard
Air, more than weight. MotorTrend towed three trailers with the same F-150 Lightning and concluded "aerodynamics have a bigger impact on towing range than weight." Its lightest trailer, a 3,140 lb (1,424 kg) R-Pod, still cut the range to 115 mi (185 km). A trailer that sits in the truck's wake costs less than one that stands tall above the cab.
Speed. Drag climbs steeply with speed, and a gas truck hides it behind a big tank and quick fill-ups. An EV shows it to you in range. Slowing down is the one lever you control on the day.
Cold, wind and hills. A cold battery, cabin heat, a headwind or a long climb all stack on top of the trailer. Regenerative braking gives some back on the way down, never all of it.
No buffer. EVs do not tow badly. They pull hard and smoothly. The difference is that a gas truck starts with a big tank and refuels almost anywhere in minutes, so the same drag costs it a stop at a gas station instead of a planned charge.
EV and hybrid towing capacity, from the makers
These are the maximums each maker prints, for the configuration named. Your own vehicle's limit can be lower. It is in the owner's manual, on the hitch receiver label, and constrained by payload on the door sticker. A model missing here is missing because we have not read a figure on the maker's own page, not because it cannot tow.

A tow rating says how much the vehicle can pull. It says nothing about how far. In Car and Driver's test, trucks rated to tow far more than their 6,100 lb camper still needed to charge after about 100 to 140 mi (161 to 225 km).
Hybrids tow differently
A hybrid such as the F-150 PowerBoost or the Maverick burns gas, so towing costs you fuel economy rather than charging stops. Plan it like any gas truck. Hybrid crossovers often carry modest tow ratings, so read the manual before you buy the trailer, not after.
Planning charging stops with a trailer
- Look for pull-through stalls. Many fast chargers are nose-in. With a trailer that can mean blocking several stalls or unhitching to plug in. Check the charger app's photos and notes before you rely on a site.
- Charge to about 80%, not 100%. Fast charging slows as the battery fills. In Edmunds' tow test, stopping at roughly 80 to 85% saved time overall.
- Keep a real reserve. A broken or occupied charger, a detour or a headwind can cost the margin you planned on. The calculator's reserve is there for that.
- Use the truck's trailer mode. Many EVs let you enter the trailer so the range estimate and route planner account for it. The trip meter on your first tow is the best loss figure you will ever have; put it in the calculator as your own figure.
Payload and tongue weight still apply
EVs are heavy, and battery weight comes out of the same gross vehicle weight rating as passengers, cargo and the trailer tongue. Check the payload on your door sticker with the payload calculator, size the tongue with the tongue weight calculator, and run the whole rig through Can I tow this? Curb weight and GVWR for a specific EV are on its labels; GVWR and GCWR explained shows what each one limits.
